Appointed by the European Commission in 2003, EURid manages the .eu top-level domain (TLD) and its variants in the Greek and Cyrillic scripts. The core aspects of its governance and public policy rules are set out in primary legislation (e.g. Regulation 2019/517) and closely overseen by the European Commission. The commission has the authority to define implementation principles for the .eu TLD, establish eligibility criteria for registration, designate the registry and oversee its operations.
EURid is a non-profit company registered in Belgium and is structured as a membership organisation. Our Articles of Association describe how the organisation is governed. EURid’s key governance structures are its members, represented in the Strategic Committee, who elect the board of directors. The board oversees EURid’s management team and operations.

Any non-commercial organisation with a pan-European interest in the internet as a stakeholder can become a member of EURid. Together, the members form EURid’s General Assembly, which appoints and dismisses board directors, including the chair, vice-chair and the company’s auditors. Each member has one vote in the General Assembly. The board can appoint up to three independent members. You can find a list of the current members below.
The Board of Directors holds ultimate legal responsibility for EURid. It consists of a minimum of three and a maximum of seven directors, including up to two independent members. The board appoints the chair and vice-chair from among its members. The general manager, while not a board member, participates in board meetings along with other management team members as required. Directors are nominated by EURid’s members, with each member eligible to nominate one candidate. Directors serve renewable terms of up to four years. The board meets at least four times a year and has policies to manage conflicts of interest, corporate governance, and confidentiality.
The Strategic Committee is a multi-stakeholder group that advises the board of directors and management team on strategic issues related to the management, organisation and administration of the .eu TLD, including cybersecurity and data protection. It also provides guidance on policy and promotes European values. The committee includes representatives from the board, members and independent stakeholders. Each member has one representative in the Strategic Committee, and the committee can include up to three independent candidates. Board members automatically join the Strategic Committee.
