Brussels, 7 December 2011 – Bulgaria, Lithuania and Romania have the highest volume of new .eu registrations of all European Union Member States, each growing by over 10% in Q3 2011, according to the latest quarterly progress report from EURid, the .eu top-level domain registry.
“These healthy .eu growth figures show that particularly the newer EU countries have embraced .eu,” said Marc Van Wesemael, EURid’s General Manager. “Q3 2011 was a strong quarter with the highest rate of new .eu registrations over an equivalent period for five years.”
Mr Van Wesemael also noted that considering the Euro crisis and current economic situation, .eu’s growth clearly demonstrates that the European image is still positive among businesses, who are the largest category of .eu domain name holders.
Bulgaria recorded the most growth, with an 18% increase of .eu registrations compared with Q2 2011, followed by Lithuania (13%) and Romania (12%). Registration rates increased in 20 other EU Member States as well. .eu completed Q3 2011 with 3.41 million registered .eu domain names, an increase of 5.2% compared with Q3 2010.
The third quarter also saw EURid perform a business continuity exercise to assess the .eu registry’s disaster recovery response. The .eu registration systems were transferred to .eu’s backup data centre, successfully testing the robustness of the .eu infrastructure.
