Technical Limitations

Bear these rules in mind when deciding which .eu domain name you would like to register:

  • The only characters allowed in a .eu domain name are:

    • The alphabetical characters a to z
    • The numbers 0 through 9
    • The hyphen (-)
    • Certain Unicode characters. Click here for a complete supported character list.
  • You are not allowed to mix characters from different scripts (for example, Latin, Greek and Cyrillic) in a single .eu domain name. This means each domain name can contain characters from a single (1) script only. The numbers 0 through 9 and the hyphen are considered to be part of every script.

  • Domain names must be a minimum of two (2) characters long (not including the .eu suffix). For IDNs, this restriction applies before the domain name has been converted into an ACE string.

Certain domain names that are two characters long are also considered to be too short. This is because certain two-character combinations can also be represented by one single Unicode character.

  • Domain names may not be longer than 63 characters (not including the .eu suffix). For IDNs, this restriction applies after the domain name has been converted into an ACE string.

  • Domain names may not begin with the characters ‘xn--‘ and contain Unicode characters.

  • No domain name can begin with or end with a hyphen (-).

  • Domain names may not have hyphens in the third (3) and fourth(4) positions at the same time unless:

    • There is also a hyphen in the second position
    • The hyphens are preceded by the characters ‘xn’ and the domain name can be converted to a valid IDN.
