.eu gets a second anycast network

Brussels, 8 September 2008 - EURid, the European registry for .eu, is pleased to announce that it has added a second anycast network to its infrastructure. Together the anycast networks further bolster the stability and robustness of the .eu zone.

The newest anycast name server network is operated by Community DNS ltd. and uses the Community DNS Anycast Resolution System. This system features compatibility with the latest standards and technology, as well as a diverse DNS architecture and an expanding network of anycast instances.

Using anycast technology means that the .eu name servers can operate as one machine from a network perspective, while in practise they are spread all over the world. This decentralisation of the registry’s infrastructure increases stability in the unlikely event that one of the servers should go down or become unreachable.

The six original name servers are located throughout Europe in Amsterdam, Brussels, Ljubljana, London, Milan and Prague. Each is connected to the local national Internet Exchange.
